Looking Back at 2011: A Year of Expansion and Improvement at St. James Parish Hospital
After cutting ribbon at a new, state-of-the-art facility in 2008, St. James Parish Hospital continued to grow by adding new awards, new services and beginning new construction.
The year 2011 was a busy and impressive year at St. James Parish Hospital, a Joint Commission Accredited facility which has been serving the River Parishes and beyond since 1955. In 2011, the hospital broke ground on a new Medical Plaza which will house the local Lutcher Family Clinic and several independent specialty clinics offering services such as cardiology, gastroenterology, nerve conduction, orthopedics, podiatry, psychiatry, surgery, wound care, urology and pain management. In addition, the Medical Plaza will be constructed with extra space in order to account for future growth—which means even more convenience for patients that don’t want to waste time or gas traveling to the big cities for the same services and physicians.
St. James Parish Hospital was also extremely excited to install its cutting-edge digital mammography technology last year. Without the need to transfer images to film, a digital mammogram offers quicker results that are easier to securely share with patients’ physician offices. Most importantly, this technology reveals clearer images especially for those with dense breast tissue.
Last year was also a year of great surprises at St. James Parish Hospital. In 2011, CEO Mary Ellen Pratt was shocked when she received a call from the Louisiana Hospital Association revealing that St. James Parish Hospital was chosen by the American Hospital Association as a “Center of Innovation” on one of the national organization’s newsletters. The newsletter highlighted St. James Parish Hospital’s Telestroke Technology, which utilizes state-of-the-art equipment allowing a neurologist on staff at Ochsner Medical Center to evaluate a patient remotely and work with staff in the hospital to recommend on-the-spot treatments. This technology greatly increases the likelihood of a successful recovery for many stroke patients.
St. James Parish Hospital ended 2011 with a bang by implementing an innovative software technology that enhances communication, increases patient safety and reduces treatment delays. Computerized-Physician Order Enter (CPOE), allows physicians to electronically enter instructions from any location and relay them over a secure computer network. In additional to revolutionizing physician orders which were previously handwritten, CPOE protects patients by checking for errors and alerting physicians to potential medication conflicts or incorrect dosages.
St. James Parish Hospital offers a growing range of services including: Acute Care, 24/7 ER, Digital Radiology Services, a Full-Service Lab, Cardiopulmonary Services, Rehabilitation Services, Surgical Services, Skilled Nursing and several specialty clinics.
