St. James Parish Hospital provides care for patients who require daily skilled services. Our Skilled Nursing Program combines healthcare experience, expanded medical resources and compassionate care to treat our patients.

Patients being cared for at St. James Parish Hospital have direct access to all of our medical departments. Our team is staffed by experienced physicians, nurses, certified nursing assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, certified therapy assistants and a Nurse Practitioner. We work together to achieve each patient’s specific healthcare goal through compassionate, competent care while doing our best to make each patient’s stay as pleasant, comfortable and close to home as possible.

What is Skilled Care?

Skilled care, often referred to as “swing bed” services, offers a higher level of care for patients who are not quite ready to return home or to an alternate facility due to a medical condition, injury or surgery. Skilled patients often need daily, high-level services such as extensive rehabilitation, IV antibiotics or wound care.

  • We are equipped for in-house MRIs, X-Rays, CT Scans, Ultrasounds, and more
  • We employ an in-house Therapy Team (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy)
  • Specialists are available for consultation if condition deems necessary
  • In addition to skilled care, patients are assisted with daily activities such as bathing and dressing
  • Our therapy team utilizes an “ADL” Area which allows patients to engage in activities of daily living during sessions
  • Our therapy gym is equipped with a Solo-Step Overhead Track & Harness for patients who need extra support during rehab
  • We help patients feel at home by giving them the option to wear house-clothes and encouraging them to bring personal belongings
  • We encourage patients to bring activities such as crafts, games, books, electronic devices and puzzles
Summary of Skilled Services:
  • Daily/Twice Daily Rehab Treatments (up to 2 hours) (Ex: Post Hip/Knee Replacement)
  • Wound Care/Wound Vacs
  • Wound Debridement
  • Diabetes Management
  • IV Antibiotics (No cost-based limitations)
  • IV Hydration/TPN (Total Parental Nutrition)
  • Intravenous Injections
  • Tracheotomy Care
  • PEG/NG Tube feeding
  • Oxygen Weaning Nebulizers
Criteria for Admission:
  • Medicare Part A, Medicare Advantage Plans
    (Ex: Humana Gold, Peoples Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare)
  • Three Consecutive Midnights in a Hospital in a 30-Day Period (Medicare)
  • Advantage Plans DO NOT Require an Inpatient Hospital Stay
  • Services Must Be Ordered by a Physician
  • Reasonable and Necessary Services
  • Services Performed Daily (Monday – Saturday with a day of rest of Sunday)
Medicare Coverage (14-20 days = Average Length of Stay)

Our average length of stay is 2 weeks.

  • 1-20 Days
    • Medicare pays full cost
    • Your pay nothing
  • 21-100 Days
    • Medicare pays all but daily copay
    • You pay a daily copay

*Advantage Plans have varying copays
*Stays are qualified on a week-to-week basis as approved by insurance
*Daily copay may be covered by secondary insurance
