Safe Sitter® prepares students in grades 6-8 (for school year 2026-2027) to be safe when they’re home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Students learn life-saving skills and helpful information and lessons are filled with fun activities and role-playing exercises. Students even get to use CPR manikins to practice choking rescue and CPR. Learn more.

Class Info

• Classes are held in the Hospital Meeting Room
• Each class is two days 8:30am-3:00pm (both days are required)
• Cost of Class = $70 (exact cash or check written to St. James Parish Hospital). No refunds. In the event a student cannot attend, a voucher will be given for a future class.
• Payments are due at least one week prior to class date or class spot will be forfeited.
• Students will need to bring a lunch and drink both days.
• Students should dress comfortably and appropriately to be able to move around.
• Closed-toe shoes are required (tennis shoes recommended).
• Students are also encouraged to bring a jacket as the room can get cold.
• 2026 dates are May 27-28 and June 4-5. *

*Certification is through the American Heart Association. *

Heartsaver CPR/AED is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants.

The First Aid Class teaches basic first aid procedures for medical emergencies and environmental emergencies.

The minimum age to attend this course is 14 and any student under 16 must be enrolled with a paid adult.

All CPR and First Aid classes will be held in the hospital’s Meeting Room.*

Payments for classes are due on the day of the class and can be paid to the hospital cashier located in the main entrance of the hospital.**

Participants taking the CPR portion of the class only may finish sooner than those taking the combined class.
